With massive protests threatening to upend the three-decades-long reign of President Hosni Mubarak, the world has been captivated by the events in Egypt. In a survey conducted April 12 to May 7, 2010, the Pew Research Center's Global Attitudes Project examined the views of Muslims in Egypt about politics and the role Islam should play in it. That survey, taken months before the current unrest in the Middle East, found that a majority of Egyptian Muslims said that democracy was preferable to any other kind of government. An overwhelming majority also believes Islam's influence in politics is positive.

Pew found that 82% of Egyptians support stoning as a punishment for adultery, 84% favor the death penalty for Muslims who leave the religion, and in the struggle between "modernizers" and "fundamentalists," 59% identify with fundamentalists."
