Pěkný start do nového týdne

Zahajujeme článkem z the Economist z minulého týdne, který jsem přečetl až dnes - o teoriích spiknutí v USA. "26% of Republicans think Mr Obama is probably foreign-born. Other conspiracy theories about Mr Obama are even loopier. For example, some Americans think he is the Antichrist. The evidence for this, apparently, is that in the Bible Jesus is quoted as predicting that Satan will come down like lightning from heaven, and the words for “lightning” and “heaven” in Hebrew sound a bit like “Barack Obama”. (...) Some people, including Mr Obama’s own former pastor, Jeremiah Wright, believe that AIDS was cooked up by the government to kill blacks. A staggering 18% of Americans think that the government of George Bush probably knew in advance about the attacks of September 11th 2001 but allowed them to proceed anyway."

Paul Krugman postrádá Nixona, ačkoliv to byl "surely the worst person other than Dick Cheney ever to control the executive branch." Jeho návrh reformy zdravotnictví byl však paradoxně Krugmanovi blíž než současné snahy v době, kdy "America is a better country in many ways than it was 35 years ago, but our political system’s ability to deal with real problems has been degraded to such an extent that I sometimes wonder whether the country is still governable."

Profesor ekonomie na Columbia University Jeffrey D. Sachs hodnotí vládní zásahy pro boj s krizí. Zatímco čínský stimulační balík si vysloužil pozitivní evaluaci, s USA je to složitější, daňové úlevy Američané patrně spíše ušetřili než utratili. "
In short, the US stimulus effects on spending have probably been positive but small, and without a decisive effect on the economy. Moreover, concerns about the enormous US budget deficit, now running at $1.8 trillion (12% of GNP) per year, are bound to increase, not only creating enormous uncertainties in politics and financial markets, but also dimming consumer confidence as households focus their attention on potential future budget cuts and tax increases." Pro USA se otevírá historická příležitost v této chvíli "to compensate for low consumer spending with increased investment spending on sustainable technologies."

A ještě

Dominique Moisi vidí Sarkozyho plán na vůdčí roli "Club of Six" v EU jako nereálný a místo toho říká, že "the time has come once again for a major Franco-German initiative." Německo s Francií se až na rozdílné názory ohledně reakce na ekonomickou krizi a vztah k Rusku docela shodují, což by mohly demonstrovat i na nějaké velké společné bezpečnostní iniciativě, která "would also have the benefit of sending a message to the rest of the EU, particularly to its Václav Klauses: “If you decide to paralyze the Union through stubborn ill will, you will only end up excluding yourselves, rather than dictating Europe’s fate.” France and Germany cannot move Europe alone, but Europe without them cannot move at all."
